No matter where you go, you’ll find
people snacking. The snacks people like to
eat differ from country to country. This is
partly because foods that are available in
some regions of the world are not found in
other regions. It is also partly because food
preferences vary from nation to nation.
Let’s take an imaginary trip around the
globe to see what teens like you commonly
have for snacks. For our first stop, let’s head
south to Ecuador. There you’ll find people
snacking on crunchy platano fritos. A
platano looks like a large banana. Platano
fritos are made by thinly slicing the platano
and frying it. This snack looks like banana
chips.
Now, let’s catch a plane and fly across
the Atlantic Ocean to the African country
of Ghana. Here, peanuts are a popular
snack anytime of the day or night. Next,
join a camel caravan and head for Egypt.
You can share a snack of falafel with the
teens who live there. Falafel is so popular
that it is sold in fast-food restaurants.
Mashed chickpeas, chili peppers, eggs,
garlic, and flour are used to make falafel.
A cruise ship will take us to our next
stop, India. In India, everyone enjoys a
snack of pani pouri. These treats look like
bread bubbles that are about the size of a
golf ball. To eat them, punch a hole in them
with your finger. Then, fill them with small
pieces of potatoes and beans. Next, dip
them in a sweet and sour sauce and pop
them in your mouth. What a snack!
Now, let’s float across Asia in a hot air
balloon until we hit China. Here you’ll find
people snacking on fruit ices. Fruit ices are
a lot like a sno-cone, except they are made
with chunks of fresh fruit. Fruit ices are
very popular on hot summer afternoons.
For our last stop, we’ll hop onto a jet. Its
destination is the U.S.A. Back home at last!
All this traveling has probably made you
hungry. Some teens in the United States
might choose a slice of apple crumb pie for
a snack. Others may prefer crispy, crunchy,
carrot sticks. What do you reach for when
you want a snack?
