like whole-wheat bread, brown rice,
whole pieces of fruit, and vegetables.

Food Safety
Keeping food safe to eat is vital
to health. Foods that are not stored or
prepared in a clean and safe manner can
cause foodborne illness. Many people get
sick each year from eating food that contain
harmful bacteria and other contaminants.
MyPlate
MyPlate is a tool that shows the key
parts of a nutritious diet. It encourages
healthier food choices. The goal of MyPlate
is to remind people to build a healthy plate
at mealtimes. MyPlate was developed by
the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA), 3-7. You can access the website at
www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
As you can see, MyPlate has five parts.
Each part represents one of the five food
groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and
protein foods. The foods in these groups are
vital for good health. Each contains some,
but not all, of the nutrients you need. Some
foods found in each group are listed in 3-8.
