Foods are also marketed in many other places. Look around your school and neighborhood. You might see food company logos on vending machines, book covers, or posters. There may be billboards, scoreboards, or basketball backboards that advertise food. You might even have a T-shirt with the logo of a favorite candy bar or cereal. Many candy and snack-food companies have websites that use games, chat rooms, and screensavers to market their food. Do a quick Internet image search for a common soft drink brand or fast-food chain. You will find many objects that have the food’s logo on them. You might find toys, race cars, hot-air balloons, umbrellas, and more (Figure 1.10). Next time you buy a food, think about how food marketing affected your choice. Knowledge What a person knows about nutrition and food can influence food choices. Did you ever eat a food just because you knew it was good for you? More and more people are learning about nutrition. They are using their knowledge to choose a healthy diet. They know that eating well can help them look and feel great. Reflect on Your Food Choices As you can see, many factors affect your appetite and food choices. It is sometimes hard to say why you eat a certain food. By keeping a journal, you might be able to identify the factors that affect your food choices (Figure 1.11). You will have an answer the next time you ask yourself “Why did I eat that?” This knowledge can help you identify food choices you might want to change or improve and what causes you to make those choices.
