An important item that comes with your sewing machine is the instruction
manual, 24-12. It shows the parts of the machine and explains what they do. It
describes any accessories and any special features. Be sure to read the instruc-
tion manual thoroughly before you begin using a sewing machine.
Using the Sewing Machine
Machines operate with two threads: the needle thread and the bobbin
thread. The needle thread runs from the spool pin, around the tension discs,
and through the take-up lever, thread guides, and needle. The bobbin thread
runs from the bobbin plate up through the throat plate. A stitch forms when the
needle and bobbin threads interlock. Study the machine diagram to see how to
thread the sewing machine.
Begin to sew using some fabric scraps. Use two layers since most sewing is
done with two pieces of fabric.
Study the chart of sewing-machine problems and cures in 24-13. It will
help you determine the source of any problems that might occur and how to
correct them.
