iv Put the emphasis on communication: Approaching College with Purpose offers a critical look at the writing and communication process. It asks students to think critically about “good writing” and their own ability to communicate effectively. Provide just-in-time skill building resources: The text provides a set of toolboxes to enhance critical skills related to time management and effective writing. These Toolboxes offer focused exercises and digestible bites of information that can be used as “just in time” resources on their own or be integrated into other chapters. Approaching College with Purpose has 10 chapters, which are broken into three Parts: The Transition to College, Collaborating and Communicating, and Beyond College. Every two chapters is considered a set. The first chapter in the set provides current research about the topic, explains its relevance to student success, and guides students to assess their current mindset and habits in rela- tion to the topic. The second chapter in the set focuses on practical application of the knowledge and awareness the students cultivated, giving them multiple opportunities to apply that awareness in the context of real situations. After Parts I and II, students will find Toolboxes with essential skills like time management and planning their writing. A variety of features are included in each chapter to support the book’s approach. Details on those features can be found in the Guided Tour.
