Now, we acknowledge that some of us need to hold on to pro- tective layers in order to function or survive in a possibly inhospitable environ- ment, depending on our identities. But we ask that you do your best to find places where you can pull back the reigns on “knowing things” to leave a little space for something new and different. Hopefully, this chapter serves to help you slow down time just a bit so you can see the spaces for you to notice your surroundings, make mindful decisions, and invest time and energy in things that matter to you. If you come to really believe that you define your experience, you can make the most of your time and also make the most out of your experience in college. SIMPLE STRATEGIES Look back at In Your Own Words 2.7, choose two or three items on your list, and commit to approaching these parts of your college life with vulnerability in mind. Brainstorm what you can do on a daily basis to practice bravery in these areas. Try writing a reminder of this commitment on a sticky note and put this somewhere where you’ll see it every day. Consider discussing this idea with friends who can help you hold yourself accountable to this commitment. Reflect frequently on how this work is going, and be flexible to shifting your goals or reframing your approach as necessary, while being kind and understanding with yourself.
