Section 4 Construction Systems and Supplemental Drawings
3. Search online to fi nd a ranch-style fl oor
plan that interests you. Recreate the fl oor
plan using manual or CADD techniques.
Draft a longitudinal building section and
a transverse building section for the fl oor
plan. Be sure to identify both sections on
the fl oor plan.
Problem Solving
Case Study
Your client wants to build a custom home
in Glendale, Arizona. Like most other cities,
Glendale reviews the architectural working
drawings for a project before issuing a building
permit. Find out more about the requirements
for getting a building permit in Glendale. What
building sections do you need to include to
show suffi cient detail to get the building permit
for your client?
Certifi cation Prep

detail than a partial or full section.

where on a building a building section
is taken.
2. Which of the following statements are false?

CADD is typically drawn at a scale of
1/4″ = 1′-0″.

SECTION

3. Match each type of building section with
its description.
Building sections: 1. Partial section, 2. Full
section, 3. Specifi c section, 4. Wall section
A. Runs across the full length or width of
a building.
B. Runs at least halfway across a
building.
C. Contains more detail than other types
of sections.
D. Conveys information about one
specifi c part or feature of the structure.
Curricular Connections
1. Language Arts. The notes on a building
section are a critical part of the drawing.
They must be clear and easy to understand,
yet concise enough to fi t in a small area.
Conduct research to fi nd terminology and
abbreviations that are often used on building
sections that are not used in everyday
English. For example, the abbreviation
OC, o.c., or O.C. is often used to mean “on
center.” Make a table to show the terms
you fi nd, what each term means, and an
example of how each can be used on a
building section.
