ellipse: A regular oval shape that has a major
(longer) diameter and a minor (shorter)
diameter.
employability skills: Skills that help you get
and keep a job.
engineered wood products (EWPs): A class of
structural wood members that combine wood
veneers and fi bers with adhesives to form
beams, headers, joists, and panels that have
uniformly high quality and strength.
entourage: Surroundings such as trees, shrubs,
cars, people, and terrain that add realism to a
presentation drawing.
entrepreneur: A person who starts, manages,
and assumes the risks of a business.
equity: The amount a house is worth minus
the amount the homeowner owes on it.
estimating: The organized effort to determine
the total cost of materials, labor, and other
services required to build a house.
estimator: A person who calculates the costs of
materials and labor for building a structure.
excavate: Remove the top soil at a construction
site.
expansion fl oor plan: A fl oor plan that includes
a proposed design for later expansion of the
building or home.
extended plenum system: A ductwork system
that has a large, rectangular duct or plenum
for the main supply. Round ducts extend from
the main supply to the individual registers.
extension line: Thin line that runs from the ends
of a dimension line to the object or feature
being dimensioned.
exterior insulation fi nish system (EIFS): A
wall covering system that provides thermal
insulation and a durable external fi nish
resembling stucco or stone.

face brick: Brick that is uniform in size and has
sharp corners and lines.
fi ll light: A diffused light source used to provide
general lighting in a rendered presentation
drawing.
fi llet: A smoothly fi tted internal arc of a specifi ed
radius between two lines, arcs, or circles.
double-action door: Door that is hinged so that
it can swing either way (in or out) through
an arc of 180°.
double-hung window: A window that has two
sashes that slide up and down in grooves
formed in the window frame.
double-L stairs: A stairway that has two 90°
turns and two landings along the fl ight, but
is not U-shaped.
downspout: A vertical pipe that receives the
water from a gutter outlet and carries it to
ground level, where an extension directs the
water away from the house.
drip cap: A piece placed over the top piece of
casing to shed water.
ducts: Round or rectangular passages in a
forced-air heating or cooling system that
transport conditioned air throughout the
house.
ductwork: The network or system of ducts in
the distribution system of a forced-air climate
control system.
Dutch door: A door that has separate lower
and upper sections that can be opened
independently.
E
earthquake zone: An area that is known to be
prone to earthquakes. Also called a seismic area.
ecosystem: The interaction of plants and animals
with each other and the environment.
electric radiant system: A heating system
in which resistance wiring embedded in
the ceiling, fl oor, or baseboards is used to
produce heat.
electrical plan: A plan that locates switches,
electrical outlets, ceiling fi xtures, television
and cable jacks, LAN connections, the service
entrance location, and the panel box.
electron-stimulated luminescence (ESL) light:
A lightbulb that produces light by accelerating
electrons to hit a fl uorescent surface, similar
to the process used in cathode ray tubes.
elevation: A drawing, typically made as an
orthographic projection, that shows the
exterior features of one side of a structure.
