4 Auto Engine Performance and Driveability
Student technicians can use Auto Engine Performance
and Driveability to get a head start on understanding the
latest automotive systems. Parts of this text review basic
troubleshooting techniques, automotive electronics, engine
computer systems, ignition systems, electronic fuel injec-
tion, emissions control systems, and nonengine-related
performance problems. The text also reviews material cov-
ered in courses on engines, electrical/electronics, and drive
train systems. The material in this book will help prepare
you to take the ASE Engine Performance test (A8).
Working technicians can refer to this text for informa-
tion on the latest automotive designs, test equipment, and
computer-specific troubleshooting techniques. Technicians
who are familiar with only one make or type of vehicle
can also use the information presented here to determine
how all systems, components, and service procedures are
similar, and where they are different.
Auto Engine Performance and Driveability can also
be used for review before entering a state-sponsored auto
emissions Inspection and Maintenance (I/M and IM 240)
training class in areas where this testing is performed. Others
who will find Auto Engine Performance and Driveability
useful as a source of review material include experienced
ASE-certified Engine Performance technicians preparing to
take the ASE Advanced Engine Performance (L1) test.
A workbook is also available for Auto Engine
Performance and Driveability. It contains chapters that cor-
respond with the chapters in this text, as well as hands-on
jobs.
