measures the deflection on a straight section of the belt. If it is not
available, adjust the belt tension until a moderate finger pressure
is needed to twist the belt one-quarter turn. (General Motors)

Installing the Timing Belt Cover
The timing belt cover is simply a plastic or sheet
metal shroud around the timing belt. It keeps debris off the
belt and protects your hands when working in the engine
compartment. Unlike the front cover, the timing cover
does not contain an oil seal, Figure 23-19.
To install the cover, simply fit it into place on the front
of the engine. If rubber washers are used, make sure they are
installed. They prevent cover vibration, noise, and cracking
of the cover. Check that all fasteners are in place and that
the belt and sprockets do not rub on the timing belt cover.
Note: Front cover installation is discussed
later in this chapter. The timing belt cover
is installed after the front cover.
Timing Gear Service
Timing gears are normally more dependable than
timing chains. See Figure 23-20. They will provide
thousands of miles of trouble-free engine operation.
However, after prolonged use, timing gear teeth can wear
or become chipped and damaged, requiring replacement.
Timing gear service is similar to timing chain service.
Inspect the old timing gears carefully. Look for any signs of
wear or other problems. Replace the gears as a set if needed.
Installing Timing Gears
Timing gears are usually press-fit on the crankshaft
and camshaft. A wheel puller is normally needed to
remove the crankshaft gear.
