Vibration Damper Installation
Before installing the vibration damper, check that the
crankshaft snout key is properly installed and tight in its
groove. Then, place lubricant on the damper seal surface,
Figure 23-29A. Fit the damper onto the crankshaft without
pushing the key out of its groove, Figure 23-29B. Install the
crankshaft snout bolt and washer.
Usually, the crankshaft snout bolt can be tightened
to force the damper into position. If light hammering is
necessary, tap in the center of the damper. Never ham-
mer on its outer ring. The outer ring is mounted on rub-
ber. Hammering on the outer ring could shift the ring or
damage the rubber and ruin the damper. Sometimes, a
special driver is needed to install the damper, Figure 23-30.
Make sure the damper seats squarely on the crank-
shaft snout. If it becomes misaligned during assembly, stop
and align the damper to prevent part damage. Once the
damper is fully seated, torque the crankshaft snout bolt, if
so equipped.
Install any other parts, such as the crankshaft pulley,
timing pointer, brackets. Figure 23-31 shows a special
holding tool recommended by one manufacturer to hold
the pulley while torquing the pulley nut.
Summary
Timing chain wear can allow the camshaft to go out
of time with the crankshaft. This can reduce engine power
