How to Use the Color Key
Colors are used throughout Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles to help illustrate different
transmission and transaxle components. Color is also used to help clarify hydraulic flow diagrams. The
following key shows what each color represents.
Transmission and Transaxle Components
Torque converter, gears, shafts, and related components
Holding members (bands, clutches, etc.)
Hydraulic control components (valve body, oil pump,
hydraulic valves, servos, accumulators, etc.)
Electronic control components (sensors, solenoids, etc.)
Case, housings, and oil pans

Hydraulic Flow Diagrams
The color keys used for the hydraulic flow diagrams found in this textbook are indicated on the
individual diagrams. The keys will vary from one diagram to another, depending on the transmission
or transaxle manufacturer. Therefore, be sure to check the color key on each diagram before studying
the illustration.
