Figure 15-18. The valve body can be removed after the attaching bolts are removed. Many parts, such as spacer plates,
accumulator pistons, oil supply tubes, and check balls, are held in place by the valve body. Make sure you do not lose any of these
parts when removing the valve body. (General Motors)

spring tension with a small screwdriver. They should snap back
into place.
performance. Shift kits can be installed as a way to prevent
transmission or transaxle problems, or during overhaul to
improve the durability of the rebuilt unit.
Some shift kits, such as the one shown in Figure 15-22,
are designed to cure all the potential problems in one trans-
mission or transaxle model. Other shift kits contain only the
parts and instructions to fix one common problem in a
particular unit, Figure 15-23.
Reinstalling the Valve Body
To reinstall the valve body after cleaning, first remove
all gasket material from the spacer plate and the transmis-
sion case. Be careful not to scratch the spacer plate or the
case. Some technicians use solvents to dissolve the gasket
material. Thoroughly clean the spacer plate and case to
remove all particles of gasket material.
After everything has been cleaned, locate the position
of all check balls and install them. Use assembly lube or
petroleum jelly to hold the check balls in position. Also
locate all feed tubes, electrical components, and other
parts and reinstall them on the valve body.
