Figure 15-22. Many shift improvement packages are designed
to fix all weak areas of a particular transmission. Shift kits such
as this one correct all problems caused by improper fluid flow
and pressure. (Superior)
Caution: Do not overtighten the valve body
attaching bolts. Overtightening and using
an improper tightening sequence can
cause the valve body to warp, leading to sticking
valves.
Install the spacer plate over the valve body, using new
gaskets. Do not use sealer on the gaskets. Install any check
balls that fit between the spacer plate and case, being sure
to properly position them and hold them in place with
assembly lube or petroleum jelly. If desired, install guide
pins in the bottom of the case to make valve body position-
ing easier.
Carefully raise the valve body into position. Lightly
install any feed tubes as the valve body is being raised. As
the bolts are tightened, make sure that any feed tubes enter
the case smoothly.
Servo Service
Many band servos can be serviced without removing
the transmission or transaxle from the vehicle. Servos sel-
dom require service other than the replacement of the seals
and, if used, the cover gaskets. Nevertheless, the servos
should be disassembled and checked whenever the trans-
mission is disassembled. Many servo covers are held to the
transmission case with a snap ring. A special tool is required
Lightly tighten the attaching bolts, starting at the center
of the valve body and working outward. Then return to the
center of the valve body and finish tightening the bolts. If
possible, use an inch-pound torque wrench and tighten the
bolts to the specified torque. If torque specifications are not
available, use a socket with a screwdriver handle to tighten
the bolts.
Once the valve body is installed, lightly strike the feed
tubes, if used, to ensure that they are firmly seated. Replace
all electrical connectors and install the filter. Then reinstall
the pan using a new gasket and refill the transmission or
transaxle with fluid. Road test the vehicle to ensure that the
transmission is operating properly.
