20 Principles of Floral Design Associations Participation in a state fl oral association provides a good source of ongoing education. Design teams made up of industry experts present programs on current trends, mechanics, marketing, and design. Hands- on classes are offered in conjunction with annual association conferences. Association membership provides many opportunities to form business network connections. Networking, or talking to other people in the same fi eld, is a good way to make new business contacts as well as learn new concepts, Figure 1-18. State fl oral associations provide design programs, webinars, and seminars by industry experts that can benefi t designers at all levels of profi ciency. Many state organizations also offer certifi cation programs, as described later in this chapter. The Society of American Florists (SAF) is another excellent resource for professional fl orists. SAF provides marketing and business services to its member retailers, growers, wholesalers, and suppliers. It is also involved in government advocacy for the fl oriculture industry. It is a foundational organization that focuses on the entire fl oriculture industry, not just fl oral design. Presentations by Wholesale Florists In addition to supplying materials for fl ower shops, wholesale fl orists often provide educational opportunities. Wholesale fl orists present frequent seminars, lectures, and presentations on the latest trends and techniques for design applications.
