In this text, you will learn how to apply basic math concepts to the tasks you will use in the real
world, including earning a paycheck, managing a bank account, using credit cards, and creating a
budget. These and other practical topics will help you become fi nancially capable and responsible.
However, in order to successfully complete this text, you will need to develop profi ciency with some
basic mathematical skills. The skills workshops are designed to provide one way to review basic
mathematical skills.
You are encouraged to use a calculator to complete the problems in this text. It is important
that you learn how to apply formulas in this text, rather than perfecting computational skills. Select
a calculator with advanced-math functions. There are many diff erent types of calculators that can be
used, from handheld or desktop calculators to software applications on a computer. The fi rst skills
workshop discusses how to use a calculator for math problems.
