Video Game Design Composition
shown in Figure 11-18. In addition to translating movement of the player into
game action, this technology can be used to create motion data for animating
characters. Instead of tracking sensors on the actor, the technology uses spatial
recognition to determine the actor’s movements.
Sound is recorded and edited before models are animated. Animation of the
models must be synchronized to the recorded sounds.
Sound synchronization
is matching the timing of visual action to the corresponding sounds. If you
have ever seen a television show or movie where the actor’s lips do not seem to
match the words being spoken, you have seen an example of where the sound
synchronization was not correct.
Many POV games that feature realistic
human figures were created with mocap.
Research on the Internet can also lead to
finding out which games were created
with mocap. Identify at least three games
for which mocap was likely used to create
movement data for game characters. Describe how mocap was or could have
been used in each game.

A motion capture system can be used to record the movement of a real
person and provide the data to a 3D modeling system. The 3D modeling
system can then use the data to control the movement of a 3D model.
