Fluid power is used in a wide variety of devices to aid in the performance of work. These
devices range from very simple tools to complex machines. However, the operation of each
device is based on fundamental scientific concepts. This chapter discusses these concepts in
order for you to develop a general understanding of their application to fluid power systems
and the tools and machines that are operated.
Objectives
After completing this chapter, you will be able to:
■ Identify and explain the design and operation of the six basic machines.
■ Describe the factors that affect energy in fluid power systems.
■ Explain how the potential power of a fluid power system is established.
■ Describe the nature of heat and how it is measured in fluid power
systems.
■ Explain the nature of electricity and the basic methods used for electrical
measurement.
■ Identify and explain the operation of basic electrical circuits.
■ Name and describe the characteristics associated with the fluids used in
fluid power systems.
