Chapter 4 Electrical Prints, Specifi cations, and Codes 49 Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. components. These diagrams are also called one-line diagrams. An example is shown in Figure 4-10. 4.2 Electrical Specifi cations Specifi cations are the written detailed descrip- tions of the project requirements. The speci- fi cations are essential, along with the set of construction drawings, to complete the con- tractual obligations of an electrical construction project. Many project specifi cations are arranged using the Construction Specifi cation Institute’s MasterFormat®. Specifi cation writers use this numbering system to organize the various tasks involved in a construction project. The MasterFormat consists of many divisions, each addressing a general construction topic. Some of these divisions are listed in Figure 4-11. Within the MasterFormat, electrical work is found in Division 26. See Figure 4-12. Specifi c electrical topics are addressed within sections of the division. A complete list of the divisions and sections is in the MasterFormat Reference in the Appendix section. 4.3 Building Codes Localities adopt building codes to ensure that a building meets a specifi ed quality and level of safety. Code requirements make a building safer in the event of natural disasters, such as fi re, fl ood, or earthquake. The intention of build- ing codes is to prevent injury and loss of life and reduce building damage when the building is 20 1 A NQOB SURFACE 120/208 V 3Ø 4W LITES - LOBBY 945 900 900 1625 900 1625 720 1795 1795 1000 1500 720 720 1500 315 900 1375 900 1000 1750 500 1000 1000 500 500 1500 750 1500 1500 500 500 1470 1470 250 1000 1125 1125 1000 1000 5185 1000 5185 1 20 1 20 50 2 225 A LOBBY RECEPTS - LOBBY, S.D.
