Media specialists, or librarians, specialize in books and other online materials that can enhance learning. They order books, maps, computer software, and other visual materials that boost learning. Children’s librarians specialize in resources for young children (Figure 1.17). Other media specialists specialize in meeting the needs of older children, teens, or adults. In addition to remaining current in what is available and desirable, they offer reading sessions or story times, teach reading or research skills, and help students navigate computer software or internet resources. Knowledge and Skills Occupations in the professional support services pathway require highly specialized knowledge and skills plus these personal qualities—creativity, patience, and caring. These professionals must be able to work well with students, teachers, family members, and other professionals in the com- munity one-on-one or in a group setting. They must have the desire to contribute to a student’s success. Providing support services and then eval- uating outcomes is critical in order to enhance the student’s learning and environment. An undergraduate degree is usually desired for professional support careers and often a master’s degree is a requirement. Employment Needs and Trends Will there be a need for teachers by the time you are ready to teach? Yes! There will always be a need for talented teachers. Education is the key to a successful society. Children need to be educated to be contributing mem- bers of society. Adults need to learn new skills and deepen their knowledge. In fact, predictions indicate that over the next 10 years, the United States will need over two million new teachers in schools alone. Why is there a need for more teachers? First, many current teachers are reaching retirement age soon.
