Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Chapter 1 The Teaching Profession 27 educational reform. Many people believe that having more teachers with exceptional training will help students get a better education. What kinds of teachers will be in need? It depends. Some subject areas are in greater demand, including math and science. There is also a great need for more teachers who speak a language in addition to English. Bilingual education (teaching dual-language learners) is significant in most parts of the country. Teachers who have the skills to teach in two or more languages, as well as those who teach children with disabilities, continue to be in great demand. Teacher shortages already exist in many geographic areas, inner-city schools, and rural schools. In addition, population growth is likely to be greater in some states than others. Consequently, teachers who are able to relocate may have an advantage over those who are not. If you desire to teach, develop the knowledge, skills, and passion that will make you a great teacher. Teachers are always in demand. Teacher Salaries and Benefits Teacher salaries vary considerably. Location, amount of education, years of experience, and additional responsibilities are among the vari- ables that impact teacher salaries and are typically spelled out on school salary schedule—a chart or table that shows the progression of employee wages over time (Figure 1.18), although this may vary by state and school district. Public school salaries tend to be higher than those of private schools, especially nonprofit private schools. It is important to note that in most school districts the progression or increase in teacher salaries based on their years of experience and professional degrees and certifications however, this too, may vary by state. Figure 1.18 Although teacher salaries vary from state to state and by school district, this table shows a typical breakdown.
