Additional rules and regulations may be imposed by specific laboratories. Failure to comply will result in your dismissal from the laboratory setting. General Rules Food or beverages are not permitted in the laboratory, unless they are necessary for the laboratory activity. This includes chewing gum. Discard any food or beverages prior to entering the laboratory space. Visitors are not allowed in the laboratory space without prior instructor approval. No student will work unaccompanied in the laboratory. Materials from the laboratory are not to be removed from the laboratory space. All materials and supplies (models, preserved materials, chemicals, etc.) must always be handled carefully. It is your responsibility to know the location of emergency phones, sinks, chemical showers, eyewash stations, biohazard waste containers, and sharps containers. Attire and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Proper attire and personal protective equipment (PPE) must always be worn in the laboratory setting. This includes, but is not limited to: Attire Wear closed-toe shoes. Pull back or otherwise restrain long hair. Avoid wearing jewelry, including rings, dangling earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, in the laboratory if the activity involves working with chemicals or moving machinery. Do not wear contact lenses when working with wet specimens. Small traces of chemicals can be absorbed by the lenses. PPE Proper face covering (mask and/or face shield) Gloves When working with wet specimens, additional PPE must be worn, including: Goggles Long-sleeved shirt or lab coat Long pants Plastic gown (optional) Note: Students are responsible for providing their own PPE unless informed otherwise by an instructor.
