22 Electricity & Electronics 2.1 FINDING A CAREER How do you want to earn a living after you complete your education? What career will you choose to ensure an interesting and rewarding future? What type of education will you need to prepare for your chosen fi eld? Do you have the interest, desire, and ability to use the educational opportunities within your reach? Th ese are questions only you can answer. Th ere are many people, however, willing to help you answer these questions. Parents, school guidance counselors, teachers, and friends in business and industry can supply information gained from years of experience. Do not hesitate to ask them about their careers. Perhaps you are considering a career in electronics. Th e electronics industry off ers many outstanding career opportunities, Figure 2-1. Reviewing the following guidelines may help you make decisions regarding a career in this industry. Electronics is a science. If you are interested in scientifi c subjects in high school, then you would likely enjoy an electronics career. Mathematics is a tool of both scientists and engineers. Do you like math- ematics and do well in it? If your answer is yes, then you may be well-suited to an electronics career. Many scientists and engineers began electronics as a hobby. If electronics is one of your hobbies, this may indicate career success in the electronics industry. An interest survey provided on the Advance CTE website may also help you gain a more solid idea of your interests. Discuss your abilities and aptitudes with your school guidance counselor. Aptitudes are your talents and natural abilities. Take a personality inventory test. Th ese tests measure your aptitudes and strengths in specifi c areas. Electronics and other fi elds of service play a major role in daily life. Th ink of common devices that have been improved with more complex machines. For example, the communication powers of telephones, televisions, and radios have been increased through the use of satellites. Th e safety of boats and airplanes has been improved through the use of sonar and radar devices. Where else is the use of electronics apparent? Industry is electronically controlled.
