only employees or business partners can access. Pertinent real-time (instanta- e
neous as it occurs) data is available and printouts can be generated.
Quick response manufacturing (QRM) transmits product code data using
EDI technology, and is the foundation for industry-wide collaboration. It ties
together the entire supply chain to efficiently meet market needs by establish- fi
ing electronic linkages with long-term customer-supplier partner companies
through the entire chain, Figure 5.9. (Discussion on consumer scanning of QR
codes will be in another chapter.)
With these linkages, information fl ows backward through the chain for
an automatic reorder system from point-of-sale (POS) data. As product codes
of merchandise being sold at retail are recorded through checkout comput-
ers, they trigger partner manufacturers to produce those same styles, colors,
and sizes to replenish the store’s stock. In turn, as manufacturers run low on
fabrics and sewing supplies, computers prompt their partner textile firms to
automatically send more of the required goods to the apparel manufacturers.
Through such information connections with suppliers, there is quicker
just-in-time inventory replenishment throughout the chain. Companies can
keep lower inventories, and reduce supply mistakes because merchandise
decisions are automatically based on demand data. Also, as part of the sys-
tem, deliveries are more frequent, smaller, and correct.
