A+ Exam—Key Points
Some of the very basic questions on the A+ Certification exams deal
with cable and connector identification, component handling, and safety
procedures. Connector identification can be difficult for students new to
PC technology, but anyone who has worked with a PC for some time will
be able to answer these types of questions. As a student, you can prepare
by looking at the end of the cable and noting if it uses pins or a socket.
Do the same for the connection on the PC.
After studying this chapter, you will be able to:
• Give examples of how computers are used.
• Contrast analog and digital electronics.
• Give examples of computer data.
• Interpret binary and hexadecimal numbers 0 through 15.
• Compare bit, byte, and word.
• Contrast serial and parallel data transfer.
• Interpret the common prefixes associated with the computer’s size and
speed.
• Identify external computer connections.
• Identify the major components of a typical PC.
• Explain how the major computer components interact with each other.
• Contrast electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic interference, and radio
frequency interference.
• Identify common PC service tools.
• Recall common safety practices related to computer repair.
