Most of the Windows operating system
files are located by default in the
Windows
folder
on the

partition or drive. The pathname for
this location is C:\Windows. In reality, this folder
can be located on any partition. In Microsoft
technical literature, the exact location of the
Windows folder is indicated as
%systemroot%
rather than C:\Windows. The
%systemroot%
variable
is used in the path to represent the location of the
Windows folder.
File Systems
No introduction to operating systems would
be complete without mentioning file systems. A
file system refers to the method of organizing
files on a storage device. It is used by the operating
system to keep track of all files on the disk. The
