Windows Shadow Copy and Previous
Versions
The Windows Shadow Copy feature
automatically makes a copy of files that have
changed and have been saved. This feature allows
a user to open an earlier version of a file using
the Previous Versions feature. To restore a file
using the Previous Versions feature, open the
Properties
dialog box of the folder that held that
file or of the current version of that file. Click the
Previous Versions
tab. Previous versions of the
file will be listed. Select the desired file and then
click Restore. Notice that in Figure 2-19 there are
four earlier versions of the document titled CSR
Chapter 2 Revision 2012 that can be restored.
Windows Shadow Copy was first introduced
in Windows Server 2003. It is only available in
Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate
editions and in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Windows Ready Boost
Many software programs require a great
deal of RAM to operate efficiently. Otherwise,
the program responds slowly or may not
meeting. Windows Meeting Space is also referred
to as People Near Me. Windows 7 continues to
support People Near Me, but with the introduction
of Windows 8, collaboration activities are designed
more as a cloud activity.
Network Discovery
Network Discovery was introduced with
Windows Vista and continues to be supported by
Windows 7 and Windows 8. It makes setting up
and configuring a network easy as it automatically
detects and configures a network and sets up
a share and Internet connection. It also allows
files to be shared much easier in a peer-to-
peer network, while still providing security
from the Internet. The main exception arises if
there is a router or gateway being used that is
not compatible with the automatic networking
features.
Figure 2-18 shows the Network and Sharing
Center. Notice the
Network discovery
option in
the
Sharing and Discovery
section of the dialog
box. This option lets you enable and disable the
Network Discovery feature.
