is a cloud service provided for free for common
PC users, Figure 2-35.
Common Operating System
Terminology
There is a tremendous amount of operating
system terminology that is common to all
operating systems. A few terms are required to
be mastered early, such as application software,
software driver, and software patch. There will
be many more terms introduced throughout the
textbook and your instruction. Be sure to master
these three for now.

software application on the mobile device but
instead is able to connect to the host cloud as
a thin client. The advantage of the software
application being installed on the cloud service
server means that the software application will be

from their desktop, tablet, or cell phone. Another
advantage is the cloud service provider is
responsible for updating the software application,
making backup files, and providing the necessary
technical support.
Microsoft offers several versions of cloud
services at this time, such as Windows Live,
Microsoft Office 365, Windows Azure, and
Windows Intune. Some of these services are free,
