Flextime Flextime is a concept in which an employee can report to and leave work during standard approved hours, provided the employee has worked for eight consecu- tive hours. However, there are likely limitations. For example, employees may not be permitted to arrive at 5 a.m. and leave at 1 p.m. Ensure that you understand if the company allows flextime and any limitations placed on it. Overtime Make sure you understand your employer’s overtime policy. Never assume you will receive overtime pay for time worked beyond 40 hours per week. For example, those eligible for overtime may first require preap- proval from management in order to qualify for over- time pay. An overtime policy will likely be printed in the employee handbook, but asking about it during onboarding ensures you will receive all pertinent information. Personal Cell Phone Use Generally, employees are not permitted to use cell phones for personal use during work hours. However, every employer may approach this issue differently. It is worth your time to inquire about your employer’s policy during onboarding. This ensures you understand all aspects of the policy and get answers to any questions you may have.
