Alternatively, companies working with the certification organization may prepare study materials. Another way to prepare for the exam is to purchase exam-preparation materials from a bookstore or online. There are many books available for those who wish to study without taking a formal class. In addition to training materials, practice tests are often available as preparation tools. For each type of cer- tification area, the test will usually have a specific format. Typical test formats include matching, multiple choice, or short answer. Before you take an exam, be aware of the test format so that you are not surprised on exam day. Practice exams are an effective way to prepare. Many of these practice tests are available online. If you are taking a formal class, practice tests will more than likely be a part of the curriculum. A certification exam is usually administered by an official testing organization. These testing organiza- tions have been approved by the certification sponsor. Do not take a certification exam at a location that is not an official test center. It will be necessary to pre-register for the exam, and in most cases, there will be an exam fee. Be prepared to show identification, such as a driv- er’s license, when you arrive for the test.
