hospice. A medical facility
designed for people who have
only a few weeks or months
to live, which provides
a homelike atmosphere.
Hospice-type care can also be
provided in the home. (21)
HPV (human papillomavirus). A
virus that causes genital warts,
a very common sexually
transmitted infection. (8)
human resources. Resources that
come from within a person and
from other people who give
support in some way. They
include health, energy, time,
personality characteristics, and

idealization. Valuing something
far more than it is worth; a
defense mechanism. (3)
identify theft. The collection
and use of your personal
information without your
permission to commit fraud

immunization. Injections of
vaccines that prevent people
from getting certain diseases,
such as diphtheria, tetanus,
whooping cough (pertussis),

impulse buying. Unplanned
or “spur of the moment”

incest. Sexual activity between
persons who are closely

independent adoption. Type of
adoption in which birthparents
go through the legal process
of placing their baby directly

individual life cycle. From birth,
the stages of a life cycle include
infancy, toddlerhood, early
childhood, middle childhood,
adolescence, young adulthood,
middle adulthood, and older
adulthood, which lasts until

Individual Retirement Account
(IRA). An account to which
taxpayers make annual
contributions up to a set
amount. Contributions may
be taxed, but interest earnings
are generally not taxed until

infatuation. An extreme attraction
that does not last, but is often

infertility. The inability of a
couple to conceive despite
having intercourse regularly

inhalants. Substances that give
