The future is now. Discovering Careers will help you
learn to succeed in school and in your future career.
Discovering Careers was designed with you, the
student, in mind. Modern issues and a fresh presentation
of concepts invite you to connect with this text.
Exploring the many career options
available to you will help you fi nd the
career path that is just right. To help
you investigate career opportunities,
a different career is presented in each
chapter, featuring one of the 16 Career
Clusters. This feature gives you specifi cs
about each career, including what
someone who has that career does day-to-
day, what the work itself is like, and what
preparation is needed for that career.
What’s next? That is a question
that is probably at the front of
your mind right now. The best way
to be prepared for the challenges
and opportunities that are ahead
is to have a plan. The ongoing
Personal Achievement Plan
activity provides a project-based,
hands-on learning experience
with real world applications. By
completing a Personal Achievement
Plan, you will develop a route to
help you achieve your goals.
It is all about getting ready for college and
career. College and Career Readiness activities
address literacy skills to help prepare you
for the real world. The Common Core State
Standards for English Language Arts for
reading, writing, speaking, and listening
are incorporated in a Reading Prep activity
as well as end of chapter Common Core
activities. Common Career Technical Core
Career Ready Practices are also addressed.

Choosing a Career to
Guide Your Studies
Today’s actions dictate tomorrow’s outcomes.
The career you choose to pursue requires that
you make certain decisions and take certain
actions as you move through the stages of your
life. Most careers require training and preparation
beyond a high school diploma. In addition,
admissions to some training and education
programs require particular coursework to be
taken while you are still in school.
Make sure that you have everything
you need to prepare for the next step in your
life while having your ultimate goal in mind.
Carefully consider the following training-related
questions as they pertain to each stage of life.
Activity
1. Open the file called “Personal Achievement
Plan” on the companion website.
