Personal Preference and Habit
Eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures. It is often part of holidays and
special events. See 7-2. The food choices you make several times a day are
unique and influenced by many factors. You may not think much about
why you like or select certain foods. Your choices are important, however,
because they can benefit or harm your health. The secret is to balance foods

that give you pleasure with those that
offer health benefits. Knowing why you
choose certain foods can help you make
wise decisions.
The most common reason people
choose certain foods is because they like
the flavors. Some people like the hot,
peppery taste of chili. Others prefer the
bland flavor of plain rice. You may select
some foods because of habit. Perhaps you
often enjoy eating cereal for breakfast and
a piece of fruit after school. Food habits
are comforting. You do not have to think
about choices.
It is also fun to try different foods for
meals or snacks. For instance, you may
enjoy trying new foods when you eat out
with family or friends. You might decide
you like these new foods. Making a habit
of eating a wider variety of foods can
make a diet more interesting.
