Families exist around the world. You are part of a family. Your
relationships with your family members are important. A
relationship
is a
pattern of interaction with one or more persons over time.
You also need relationships outside the family. Friendships may start
because you share common interests. Relationships with neighbors may
form because you live on the same street.
Family relationships, however, are likely to have the greatest effect
on you. Family members help meet your needs. They teach you proper
behavior. This is part of socialization.
Socialization
is teaching the ways
and customs of a culture to others.
Culture
is the beliefs and customs of a
certain racial, religious, or social group.
The Family
A family is the basic unit of society. A
family
is a group of people
related to one another by blood (birth), marriage, or adoption. This group
may include a mother, a father, and one or more children. Sometimes, other
relatives are part of the family group that lives together. Also, a family may
care for children who are not related to family members.
Family members make up different generations. A
generation
is all the
people who are born and live in about the same time span. You and your
brothers and sisters are part of one generation. Your parents, aunts, and
uncles make up a second generation. Your grandparents are part of a third
generation. See 1-8.
This family photo shows three generations. 1-8
