Friendships you develop when you are
young can continue throughout your life.
1-12
A
friend
is someone you care about, trust, and respect. When you
trust
someone, you believe he or she is honest and reliable. Having friends is
part of your growth and development. See 1-12. They help you grow. They
are part of your support system.
Being a Friend
A good friend is someone with whom you share ideas, thoughts, and
dreams. (Share means to experience or enjoy with others.) Good friends talk
with one another. They laugh and have fun together. They make one another feel
good about themselves. You can enjoy both being a friend and having friends.
Friends have certain qualities. They understand one another. They are able
to help one another with problems. They care about each other instead of just
themselves. Friends are also dependable. You can count on your friends to be
there when you need them. You should also be there when they need you.
Good friends like to spend a lot of time together. Sometimes, however,
they need time apart from one another. Most people need time alone to do
what they want. Let your friends know you respect their need for privacy
by giving them time to themselves.
Another quality of a friend is being trustworthy. Friends often share
secrets. If your friend tells you a secret, do not tell others. Your friend trusts
you to keep that information private. (On the other hand, secrets that involve
health risks or danger should not be kept secret. You can help a friend more
by telling a responsible adult if you are afraid a friend could be in trouble.)

They may have lived in your neighborhood.
As you grow older, you become more
independent. You join new social groups.
You begin making your own friends. This
can be an exciting time. See 1-13.
You will meet many new people during
your life. You may meet them at school,
