Communicating Effectively
Communication is a two-way process. To communicate well, you
need to be able to speak and write clearly. This helps you send your
message correctly. Being a careful listener is also important. When people
listen carefully, they understand the message. When people communicate
effectively, they can better understand one another. They get along better
with others.
Writing is a second form of verbal communication. Written words are used
to send messages and provide information. Think about how much you learn
from books, magazines, and the Internet. Your schoolwork includes many
written assignments. You write personal notes and letters to family members
and friends. You can also use the Internet to keep in touch with them.
You need effective writing skills throughout your school years. Writing
skills are also required for most jobs. Clear writing makes your messages
easier to understand.
Another part of communicating effectively is listening. Listening is
different from just hearing what is being said.
Active listening
is focusing
on what is said and providing feedback. Active listeners give feedback.
Feedback
is a response that lets the speaker know you received and
understood the message. To communicate effectively, follow the tips shown
in Figure 1-17.

Positive Behavior
Behavior is another form of communication. You can behave in a
positive manner that communicates you care about others. You should
always be polite and never hurt other people.
Also, show that you care about yourself and have a positive
self-concept. Stand up for what you believe. People will respect you if you
do. You will not always agree with everybody. You can disagree, however,
without being afraid of making others angry. Using manners is a form of
communication. Speaking respectfully to another or standing patiently in
line sends a positive message that you care about others.
Some people behave in a negative manner. They are more concerned
with themselves than others. They are rude, hurt others, or put them down.
If you treat people like this, they may not like you and try to avoid you. Some
people do not stand up for themselves. They allow others to hurt them and
treat them without respect. They may have a negative self-concept.
