Toddlers can act upset in many ways. For
instance, when their parents leave, toddlers may
cry, act angry toward their babysitters, or refuse
to eat. Often toddlers can be distracted if they
are involved in activities they enjoy. This
may help them feel less lonely. Separation
anxiety is typical in toddlers.
Toddlers can become easily frustrated.
They may not be able to perform certain
tasks. They may want objects they cannot
have. Often toddlers do not know how to
act when they feel frustrated. They may
become angry. See 2-13. A temper tantrum
may result. They may fall to the fl oor, kick,
and scream. This is the only way they know
how to express their feelings.
If this happens, treat toddlers calmly
and gently. Scolding them does not
help. Do not, however, let them hurt
themselves or others. Show toddlers
good ways to express their anger. Talk
with them to help them express what is happening. You might say, “You
are angry because Billy took your toy.” You may suggest playing with
other toys or reading a story.
