Chapter 2 Learning About Children 77
Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc.
Children need to feel you care for and understand them as they are
learning. They like to receive praise when they learn to behave correctly
or perform tasks for themselves. See 2-19. For instance, when children tie
their shoelaces for the fi rst time, praise them. Say, “You tied your shoelaces
correctly!” Smile and encourage them to do it again. Such rewards are
important for children as they are learning.
When you care for children, encourage them to try new tasks. Show
interest in what they do. This encourages them to keep learning and trying.
When children make mistakes or do not succeed, they become discouraged.
Do not criticize them. This does not help them learn. When they are
discouraged, they need patience and understanding. They need to know you
love and accept them. Be an active listener when they share their feelings.

1. Why is giving children praise important for the learning process?
2. How can you let children know you care for and understand them?
Behavior
Children need to act in ways that are acceptable to themselves and
others. They need to learn right from wrong. They need to know how to
behave in different situations. See 2-20. Acceptable behavior helps children
get along with others. It gives them confi dence.
Children should receive a lot of encouragement when learning new tasks. 2-19
