Learning about children can help you when you babysit. You will know
how to keep children safe and happy. You will also be able to help them
grow and develop. During the fi rst fi ve years of their lives, children grow and
develop in different ways and at different rates. At birth, they are dependent on
others to take care of all their needs. By the time they reach fi ve years of age,
children are ready to attend school all day on their own.
Each year, children become more independent and learn new skills. They
learn by using their senses and playing. They also learn from other children,
teens, and adults.
During this time, children need a lot of love and support so they gain
confi dence. Communicating with children helps them learn. Praise them
and encourage them to try new tasks. This helps children learn acceptable
behavior. Time-outs can be used as a guidance technique to help correct a
child’s conduct.
