Introduction
Exploring Photography is designed to teach
you the fundamentals of photography. As you
study the text, you will become familiar with
photographic equipment, materials, methods,
and processes. Numerous photographs and
line drawings are used to support the text in
explaining the principles and describing the
techniques.
Photography is simply making pictures
with light. Your camera controls light to
record images on the light-sensitive material
called fi lm. The resulting photographs are
powerful tools of communication and beauty
which can cross language and cultural barriers.
Photography can provide you with close-
up views of faraway places such as the surface
of Mars or the moons of Jupiter. Photography
can also reveal microscopic living cells or
individual molecules. Tomorrow’s history is
being recorded today with photography.
Exploring Photography will help you
develop the skills to take and print good
pictures. Your photographs will allow you
to show your creativity and originality. The
study of photography may lead you to a pop-
ular hobby or a rewarding career.
