30 Chapter 2 Woodworking Safety
Check Equipment and
Materials
• Make sure tools and machines are in good
working condition. For example, do not use
a hammer that has a loose or split handle.
Do not use saw blades, drills, or other
tools that are bent or twisted. Report any
faulty tools or machines immediately to the
instructor.
• Make sure all cutting tools are sharp. A dull
tool is more dangerous than a sharp one.
Test the sharpness of a hand tool on a piece
of paper, not on your fi ngers, Figure 2-13.
• Make sure tools and accessories are
properly assembled and adjusted before use.
Before using any power machine, have the
instructor check the setup.
• Remove the plug from the receptacle, or
turn off the disconnect switch, before
making any changes to the setup.
• Do not disassemble any tool or machine
until the instructor has demonstrated how
to do it.
• Do not use power tools or machines that
have loose switches or frayed electrical
cords, Figure 2-14. Occasionally, people
remove the grounding pin from a grounded
(three-prong) plug. This practice is
extremely hazardous. Removing the pin
