Section 4.4 Shaping Tools 85
When using a spokeshave, make sure that
the curved design or contour has been laid out
on the stock. Use a saw or drawknife to rough
out the shape. Clamp the stock in a vise, with the
edge to be smoothed close to the jaws. Adjust the
blade for a fi ne cut. Making many fi ne cuts will
give you better results than making one thick
cut. Grasp the spokeshave with both hands, ei-
ther pushing or pulling it along the edge of the
stock. See Figure 4-54.
Career Readiness
Many new inventions come from trying
to solve a problem. Find examples of how
the need for change, to solve a problem,
or to improve a process has sparked the
development of something new.
Figure 4-54. Hold the spokeshave with both hands
and push or pull it along the edge of the stock.

Activities
1. Create a safety presentation that addresses
the proper use of and precautions for each
hand tool presented in this chapter.
2. Visit a cabinet shop to see the types of hand
saws used and how the saws are used.
Make notes while observing and report on
your visit to the class.
