better ways to prepare, distribute, package,

that serve meals and snacks prepared
outside the home. Generally, the food service
industry can be divided into commercial and
noncommercial ventures. (7)
food service manager. A food service professional
who directs and coordinates the operations of
businesses that prepare and serve food. (7)
free-form careers. Careers that include
entrepreneurial ventures, consulting work,
contract and temporary work, and part-time
work. They may also include volunteer or

general manager. The professional with the
overall responsibility for the operation of a
hospitality venue. This person performs the
administrative duties and provides general
business oversight in assignments that
include maintaining employee work records
and payroll; completing paperwork to
comply with licensing, tax, wage and hour,
unemployment compensation, and Social
Security laws; and maintaining, ordering,
and paying for new equipment. (7)
geriatric care manager. A professional who
helps older adults remain in their homes by
providing resource and referral services,
education, and support to families. He or she
may connect clients with a variety of service
providers, such as companion services, chore
services, and home health care. (12)
geriatric nutrition. A specialty that focuses on
the needs of older adults. Clinical dietitians
in this specialty work in long-term care,
assisted living facilities, home health care,
community meal programs, and other
settings that serve older adults. (6)
global family. The relationships and
interactions of a family unit with the
outside culture, often worldwide. (2)
green design. Design that attempts to
diminish the impact of new buildings
on the environment. Green design
tends to minimize use of fossil fuels
and environmentally adverse building
materials, to conserve energy, and to lower

group interview. A common way of
interviewing potential employees, especially
for entry-level positions. The simplest and
most common form of a group interview
is a company presentation followed by a

professional who cares for antique textiles
and clothing so they can be maintained
for years of enjoyment in exhibitions,
museums, libraries, and other historic or
educational institutions. (8)
home. The place where a person resides during
nonwork hours, that stores material goods,
and that is a reflection of a person’s values,
interests, and personality. (9)
home furnishings. The segment of the interior
design industry that focuses on functional
and aesthetic items such as furniture, rugs,
lighting, linens, and decorative accents. (9)
hospitality industry. The industry that serves
to meet food, shelter, and other needs of
people away from home. A multifaceted
industry that includes several major
segments: food service, lodging, travel and
tourism, recreation, and event and meeting

housing industry. An industry that focuses on
the behavioral, social, economic, functional,
and aesthetic aspects of housing, interiors,
