land-grant universities. Universities made
possible through the Morrill Act of 1862.
They were established to extend educational
opportunities that promoted agricultural,
industrial, and domestic economy (which was
later known as home economics). (1)
leadership. The process of leading others
toward an established goal. (3)
leadership skills. Skills that help an individual
to influence, motivate, and enable others
toward a goal. (14)
life coach. A professional who partners with
clients to help them create fulfilling results
in their personal and professional lives. (12)
life-work balance. Balance among the needs
of family and friends; organizations and
causes you choose to serve; activities that
promote your spiritual and/or physical
health; intellectual and emotional growth;
and the demands of a career. (17)
lighting designer. A professional who
uses different intensities and colors of
light to create a functional and pleasing
environment. (9)
loan officer. A professional who works with
a team of “back office” support personnel
who do credit checks and process the
paperwork required to qualify a buyer and
obtain a loan. (9)
lodging. Temporary housing. It takes many
forms, such as hotels, motels, lodges,
camps, inns, bed-and-breakfasts, ranches,
resorts, and cruise ships. (7)
long-term goals. Goals that may take years to
achieve. (16)

marriage and family therapist. A counselor who
helps individuals, couples, family groups, or
organizations resolve conflicts. (11)
mental health counselor. A counselor who
helps people assess, address, and treat
mental and emotional disorders. (11)
mentors. People you learn from and
admire. They have guided you, modeled
appropriate behaviors or attitudes,
and have taken an active role in your
development. (14)
mixed-form careers. Careers that include some
linear career tracks combined with periods
of free-form career paths. (17)
Morrill Act of 1862. An act that designated a
parcel of land in each state to be used for
establishing a university, called a land-
grant university. (1)
mortgage broker. A professional who does
sales and marketing for loan sources by
gathering data from buyers and connecting
buyers with lenders. The brokers do not
provide funds themselves. (9)
mortgage lender. A professional who provides
the funding for the purchase of property. (9)
multiculturalism. An approach for managing
cultural diversity in a multiethnic society,
stressing mutual respect and appreciation
for cultural differences. (4)
multiracialism. A person’s racial heritage that
is based on multiple racial ancestry. (4)
museum exhibit designer. A professional who
creates museum displays that showcase
artifacts or works of art in a way that is
pleasing, emphasizes the object, keeps it
safe, and preserves it. (9)
