2 About the Authors William H. Minnick, realizing the need for a specialized type of welding text for instructors and students, has drawn upon his many years of experi- ence as a welder, welding engineer, and community college instructor to develop this text for training future welders. The author’s career in industry includes experi- ence welding on jet engines, missiles, pressure vessels, and nuclear reactors. He developed the welding proce- dures for, and welded, the fi rst titanium pressure vessel for the Atlas missile program. He has written many technical papers, including articles on the research and development of procedures for welding exotic materials and on the modifi cation of existing welding processes for automatic and robotic applications. Mr. Minnick has developed welding certifi cate and degree programs, and taught all phases of welding and metallurgy in community colleges for more than 20 years. In addition to this Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Hand- book, he is also the author of the Gas Metal Arc Welding Handbook and the Flux Cored Arc Welding Handbook. Mark A. Prosser grew up in Michigan and learned how to weld in his father’s collision/restoration business. As a teenager, he attended a local vocational Tools for Student and Instructor Success Student Tools Student Text Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Handbook provides concise and focused instruction in the gas tungsten arc welding process. It provides complete instruction for manual welding of various ferrous and nonfer- rous metals. It also includes information about semi- automatic and automatic techniques. The book also provides related information that students will need to know as they transition from the classroom to the lab to the fi eld. These topics include safety, basic weld joints, welding symbol interpretation, equipment and supplies, qualifi cation and certifi cation, and weld inspection and repair. Instructor Tools Online Instructor Resources (OIR) Online Instructor Resources provide all the support needed to make preparation and classroom instruction easier than ever. Available in one acces- sible location, the OIR includes Instructor Resources and Instructor’s Presentations for PowerPoint®. The OIR is available as a subscription and can be accessed at school, at home, or on the go. Instructor Resources One resource provides instructors with time-saving preparation tools such as answer keys, standards correlations, editable lesson plans, and other teaching aids. Instructor’s Presentations for Power- Point® These fully customizable, richly illustrated slides help you teach and visually reinforce the key concepts from each chapter. school and competed in SkillsUSA welding competi- tions, becoming one of the six fi nalists for the world competition in the early 1990s. Mr. Prosser earned his associate’s degree in welding technology from Ferris State University. He then trans- ferred to Central Michigan University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education. He has also earned a master’s degree in Adult Education and is a CWI/CWE through the American Welding Society. He has taught professionally for 16 years in high schools, private colleges, public colleges, and univer- sities. He has worked in the automotive industry, in governmental job shops, and with structural steel and high-pressure piping for the chemical industry. Mr. Prosser is also the author of Full-Bore Sheet Metal, Full-Bore Welding, and How to Read Shop Drawings. Mr. Prosser is currently an Assistant Professor at Ferris State University’s Welding Engineering Tech- nology program in Big Rapids, Michigan. He also runs a small welding consulting company called Question Mark. In addition to writing and teaching, he performs welding seminars, training videos, and guest appearances at events around the country promoting welding and welding education.
