Chapter 21 Substrates 395
desired cut size is 6″
×
9″. The result would be that
16 pieces can be obtained using the vertical method
and 12 pieces using the cross method.
It is more economical to cut the short dimension
of the piece out of the short dimension of the sheet,
which is the number obtained using the vertical
method. However, this is true only if it is satisfactory
to have the grain run the long way on the piece.
If the grain had to run parallel to the short (6″)
dimension of the piece, it would yield only 12 pieces
(as determined using the cross method).
