Chapter 13 Grain Foods
267
Microwaving Cereal Products
Cereals, rice, and pasta do not microwave much faster than they cook convention-
ally. However, these foods are less likely to stick and burn when prepared in a micro-
wave oven. You can also prepare and serve them in the same dish, which saves time
on cleanup.
When microwaving cereal products, be sure to use containers that are large
enough to prevent boilovers. Cover these foods for microwave cooking.
You can serve pasta immediately after microwaving. Allow rice and cereal to stand
a few minutes before serving. Cereals, rice, and pasta can be reheated in a microwave
oven without stirring or adding water.
You may wish to use quick-cooking rather than conventional cereal products when
making casseroles in a microwave oven. If using conventional products, precook them
a bit less than if you were going to serve them immediately.
Using Negotiation
Tom is a miller
at the Olde Towne
Granary. The granary
grinds several
varieties of corn and
wheat brought in by
local farmers. Tom
supervises and coordinates the activities of workers
who run the cleaning and grinding machines.
Whenever the workers have a scheduling problem or
a safety concern, Tom has to handle it.
To be an effective worker, Tom needs skill in
negotiating. In a small group, answer the following
questions about Tom’s need for and use of this skill:
A. Why can’t the workers handle scheduling
problems and safety concerns themselves?
B. How might the workers respond if Tom
lacks skill in negotiating?
C. How might Olde Towne Granary be
affected if Tom lacks skill in negotiating?
D. What is another skill Tom would need
in this job? Briefl y explain why this skill
would be important.
