96 Unit 1 Introduction to Healthcare Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Clothing is an important consideration when working in a laboratory. Exposed heels and toes are vulnerable to injury so it is best to avoid shoes that expose your feet. Do not wear loose-sleeved blouses or shirts if fi re sources are in use. Protective safety equipment must be worn when working with chemicals, blood, and other items that pose a safety risk. If you are not sure when to use such equipment, ask your instructor or supervisor. You will learn more about the use of protective safety equipment later in this chapter. When doing a laboratory exercise, you may be tempted to read through the directions quickly in an effort to complete the exercise on time. For the sake of safety, read all directions carefully. Instructions for safely working with equipment and handling substances are most likely included in the laboratory exercise directions. If you are confused, ask your instructor or supervisor to explain. When working in a laboratory setting, make sure that your workspace is neat and clean during and after the procedure. You will be given instructions on how to leave your laboratory station for the next user. Imagine how you would react if the last person using your station left behind a puddle of dangerous acid. In the event of an accident, refer to the instructions and procedures for avoiding and treating injuries. Eyewash stations should be available if you are working with any liquid chemicals that might accidentally splash into your eyes. Protective eyewear must be worn if there is a possibility of chemicals splashing into the eyes. Burns, fi res, and equipment failures that result in injuries are considered emergencies. Read through all emergency policies before starting any laboratory exercise. All accidents, no matter how minor, must be reported to your instructor or supervisor immediately. As in a healthcare facility, you may have to fi ll out an incident or accident report. Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of safety equipment such as a safety shower and eyewash station(s). Following safety guidelines in all areas of healthcare, including science training, is critical whether you are a student or an employee. Check Your Understanding 1. Why might an individual department have safety rules in addition to the rules contained in the facility’s safety manual? 2. On which side of a hallway in a healthcare facility should you walk? 3. Give two examples of the importance of wearing proper clothing in a laboratory. 4. What are hospital emergency codes? Give three examples of commonly used codes and their meanings.
