Procedure 4.1 Hand Washing Rationale Standard precautions require routine and proper hand washing to remove and prevent the spread of microorganisms. Preparation 1. Locate a sink near where care will be given. The sink must have • a suffi cient supply of antimicrobial soap or an antimicrobial soap dispenser • warm running water • a dispenser by the sink with clean paper towel(s) and • a proper waste container by the sink. 2. If your uniform sleeves are long, push them up your arms so they are close to your elbows. 3. Remove your watch and rings, if possible. If you cannot remove your watch, push it up your arm so it is away from your hands. If you cannot remove your rings, you must lather soap underneath them. 4. Stand far enough away from the sink so that your clothes do not touch it (Figure 4.13). Do not touch the inside of the sink at any time. Rewash your hands if they touch the sink at any time. 7. Apply soap and work into a thick lather over your hands, wrists, and at least 1 to 2 inches above your wrists (Figure 4.14). Wards Forest Media, LLC Figure 4.13 The Procedure 5. Turn on the faucet and adjust the water temperature until it is warm. 6. Thoroughly wet your hands, wrists, and your arms a few inches above your wrists. Wards Forest Media, LLC Figure 4.14 8. Keep your hands and forearms below your elbows. Water must always fl ow down off your fi ngertips and never go up your arms. 9. Rub your palms together (to create friction) and rub between your fi ngers and thumbs. Work up a good foam as you wash every part of your hands and wrists. 10. Clean under your fi ngernails by rubbing them against the palm of the other hand to force soap to go underneath them (Figure 4.15). Clean around the tops of your nails. Under the running water, rinse your wrists and hands thoroughly, holding your hands so that your fi ngertips point downward (Figure 4.16). Do not shake water from your hands.
