Chapter 13 Assisting with Mobility 403 Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Have you received the proper training? Healthcare workers who are able to use mechanical or electronic lifts should pay attention to the following guidelines: • Follow all directions given by the appropriate provider and the equipment instructions. • Be sure the equipment is in working order and that the type of the sling being used is appropriate and the right size for the patient. • This procedure requires assistance. At least two healthcare workers will be needed. • Always ensure the bed, stretcher, or wheelchair (depending on the required lift), and the lifting equipment have locked wheels. • Carefully place the sling, making sure the lower part is behind the patient’s knees, with the upper part beneath the patient’s upper shoulder. • The lift frame must be in an open position and any open hooks should be turned away from the patient. • Be sure all attachments between the sling and the device are secure. • Ask the patient to fold his arms across his chest. Lift the patient away as the other healthcare worker supports his legs. • Position the patient above the chair, wheelchair, or stretcher and gently lower him as he is being guided by the other healthcare worker. • Make sure the patient’s feet and hands are in a comfortable position, and then lower the lift’s bar so that you can easily unhook the sling. The sling is usually left beneath the patient if another lift is anticipated. • Position the patient’s feet and hands and cover them with a blanket, if needed. Be sure he is positioned appropriately and safely. Wash your hands to ensure infection control. Check Your Understanding 1. How often should a bedridden patient’s position be changed? 2. Describe the stages of decubitus ulcers. 3. How can you prevent decubitus ulcers? 4. Describe the lateral position. 5. True or False? Any healthcare worker can operate a mechanical lift, regardless of his or her age. Range-of-Motion Exercises When a patient is immobile or on long periods of bed rest, there are several exercises that can be used to promote circulation and increased fl exibility. These are called range-of-motion (ROM) exercises. ROM exercises are standardized, structured movements that help people move each joint
